Introduction

The catalogue of species is accessible through the "Full Catalog" link in the upper left corner. Each species dataset includes information on synonyms and, in particular, detailed distributional data with the corresponding references. Images are provided whenever possible, often of type specimens, together with the relevant references for each species dataset. This catalogue is based on a literature survey and on the examination of specimens preserved in museums and private collections. Literature citations were critically assessed and, in some cases (such as the distributions of allopatric sister species), corrected.

The countries are coded according to the ISO 3166 Alpha-2 code
The states of the USA are coded according to the ISO 3166-2:US code
The provinces of China are coded according to the GB/T 2260 code

The symbol “!” refers to type specimens personally examined. TL: type locality, either verbatim (between quotation marks) or generic when no exact reference was given in the original publication. For each country, up to 2–3 bibliographic references are provided (numbers in brackets). This means that, in several cases, additional references are available for that country but are not listed. The asterisk (*) indicates the type country. The symbol (&) is used when a country is reported only in the distribution of a synonym, usually as the type country of that synonym. The symbol (#) indicates specimens personally examined from that country. For allochthonous species, the country is followed by (i), indicating an imported record. Other symbols, such as (§), (+), or (@), refer to country records based on specimens preserved in museums and listed in publications or on the web, but not personally examined. For each genus, the references corresponding to the numerical codes and symbols are listed at the beginning of the "Further Reference" sections in the species information.

Illustrations and Fotos

Whenever possible, an illustration of a type specimen is provided. Unless otherwise indicated, all photographs were taken by myself. They were taken over several years and were usually not produced specifically for this project; consequently, their quality is variable. When photographs or illustrations of type specimens are not available, a photograph of a non-type specimen is provided, where possible. Occasionally, a photograph of a species is taken from the web, with full acknowledgement of the source. For synonyms, only photographs of type specimens are provided, whenever available.

The codes of the museums in which the type, or the specimen photographed, is preserved are those suggested by the Bishop Museum.

Important Request

This catalogue is intended to be interactive and will be updated continuously. Please feel free to send comments, corrections, and suggestions. Information on NEW RECORDS from countries not currently listed is particularly welcome. In such cases, the information should be accompanied by a high-quality photograph of the specimens and full locality data.

Acknowledgements

This project has been possible only thanks to the courtesy and assistance of several friends and colleagues, including curators of most European and South African natural history museums and the Beijing National Zoological Museum, as well as many owners of private collections, who kindly allowed me to examine and photograph types and other specimens and sent me photographs and various information. Miguel Angel Alonso Zarazaga made an essential contribution to clarifying nomenclatural questions and pointed out several imprecisions. This research received partial financial support from the European Commission’s Research Infrastructure Action via the SYNTHESYS Project (AT-TAF-997, DE-TAF-3947, FR-TAF-780, FR-TAF-2713, GB-TAF-783, HU-TAF-996, SE-TAF-1875; SE-TAF-1676) and partial financial support from the Local Research ex-60% of the University of Turin, Italy. Jakob Jilg helped recover the data from the former catalogue, and André Schütte carried out the initial data migration. My special thanks go to editor-in-chief Peter E. Stüben for his kind and helpful acceptance of the Cleonini type catalogue as the 8th contribution in „Le Charançon. Catalogues & Keys“.

Historical Information

This new catalogue - now hosted at the Curculio Institute - contains the entire dataset and photographs from the former "World Catalogue of the Curculionidae: Lixinae: Cleonini", originally cited as: Meregalli, M. (2017): World Catalogue of the Curculionidae: Lixinae: Cleonini. In: Lyal C.H.C. (Ed.) International Weevil Community Website. Due to infrastructure changes, the former website and its underlying content management system (Drupal Scratchpad) were taken offline.
